When children’s baby teeth fall out earlier than usual, they should be replaced with orthodontic appliances called retainers so that other teeth do not grow into the empty space created by the tooth falling out. Retainers are used to keep this space empty until the baby teeth fall out and permanent teeth begin to grow in their place. Fixed space retainers consist of a metal strip and a metal wire. The metal strip is tied around a fixed tooth next to the missing tooth cavity, and the metal wire is pulled to the tooth on the other side of this empty space to press on the side teeth and keep the empty space open.
A space retainer is an orthodontic appliance used to maintain or sometimes increase the width of a dental arch. The retainer may be used to maintain the space of an extracted deciduous tooth or several teeth, so there are many different types. Spacers are often used in adulthood.
